Why is Assemblymember Garcia, the self-proclaimed “period princess,” pushing to pass a bill that gives Californians less information than people will have in New York?
Throughout the nation ~55 bills have been introduced to require disclosure of period products, increase access for school aged children and people who are incarcerated, or eliminate the tax on tampons!
Environmental health organization, Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), has released a new fact sheet that raises concerns about the use of nanosilver in menstrual products like period underwear and pads, calling particular attention to the antibacterial agent’s impact on important bacteria necessary for maintaining vaginal and vulva health. Not all period underwear or menstrual pads are made with nanosilver, but unfortunately companies who make these products are not required to disclose their ingredients.
With the leadership of dynamic women legislators, state and city council have passed a number of groundbreaking policies that provide more access to free period products in schools, public restrooms, and shelters -- AND have eliminated the tampon tax!
With a busy summer already over, we wanted to take some time to uplift and share some inspiring updates about our campaigns for safe period and personal care products.
Women’s rights activists are gathering in Tarrytown, New York, to hold a demonstration and press conference outside of Prestige Brands headquarters to protest against manipulative marketing, toxic products, and poor ingredient disclosure that puts women’s health at risk. Led by national women’s health non-profit, Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), and joined by Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, a leader in menstrual equity policy — the event aims to send the makers of the iconic Summer’s Eve brand a strong message: products the company claims are for “feminine cleansing” are actually harmful and promote body-shaming stigmas.
This testing doesn’t tell us everything we need to know. It is just one snapshot demonstrating that there is more to these products than is currently being disclosed.
