The law that currently oversees these products is more than 80 years old and is less than 3 pages long. Fast forward almost a century, and we now have around 10,000 ingredients used in cosmetics. Yet, the 84 billion dollar cosmetic and personal care industry is not required to meet any sort of safety standard for ingredients. A new federal bill will change that.
Take action today and tell your representative to co-sponsor the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019.
The Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2019 (H.R. 4296) was introduced by Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and covers cosmetics, professional salon products, personal care products like shampoos and body washes, and intimate care products like douches, sprays powders, and wipes.
Out of concern for harmful exposure to ingredients the European Union has banned 1,200 ingredients in cosmetics. The United States has banned….12. As a result, there are ingredients used in cosmetics, personal care and intimate products that are linked to cancer, infertility, birth defects, hormone disruption and more.
What’s more, mounting evidence shows that women of color are being impacted more by the lack of regulations than white women. Products deliberately marketed to Black women often contain toxic ingredients and a recent study found that women who douche or use “feminine” powder have higher levels of VOCs in their body. In the study Black women reported douching more than white women.
It’s time the cosmetic and personal care products industry got a makeover.
