We’re excited Senators Feinstein (D-CA) and Collins (R-ME) have re-introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act (S. 1113). Finally, we have a Senate bill that will give the FDA more authority to regulate the cosmetic industry.
But there’s a catch (isn’t there always??). While no piece of introduced legislation is perfect, there are several major flaws in the bill that needs to be fixed. Right now, the bill allows manufacturers to prove the safety of their ingredients using science supported and funded by the cosmetic industry. There’s also a huge loophole in the legislation that lets fragrance ingredients bypass the process for safety substantiation. Tell members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) that amendments must be made to ensure true protections for the public.
