Protecting Women’s Health Through Safer Chemicals

Are you alarmed by the stories of lead in kids’ toys, phthalates in fragrances, and BPA in sippy cups?

Do you wonder what chemicals might be lurking in your furniture or laundry detergent?

Do you wish there was an easier way to ensure that the products you use every day are safe and healthy for you and your family?

You are not alone.  Women across the country are voicing their support for the Safe Chemicals Act.   This law would protect women from harmful toxic chemicals that are in products used every day.

Women are Uniquely Impacted by Exposure to Toxic Chemicals

Research indicates women’s health problems linked to toxic chemical exposure are on the rise. Over the last two decades, breast cancer rates have risen from a lifetime risk of one in 20 to one in eight.  Puberty is occurring at an earlier age among young girls, and endometriosis, a leading cause of female infertility, is far more common today than it was 50 years ago. Scientific studies show that many chemicals stored in a woman’s body are passed onto her child during pregnancy and later through breast-feeding; scientists are concerned that these in utero exposures may be resulting in health problems like asthma, diabetes, and obesity later in life.

The Safe Chemicals Act Can Help!

This new law would help protect women’s health by:

  • Ensuring that chemicals are safe for the most vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and children;
  • Requiring the EPA to identify and restrict the “worst of the worst” chemicals, those that don’t break down in the environment and build up in women’s bodies; and
  • Requiring basic health and safety information for all chemicals currently used in consumer products and for new chemicals entering the market.
